WHAT IS THIS PROJECT ALL ABOUT?

The 200K Bamboohay Challenge is a youth-led project initiative of the Student Catholic Action of the Philippines in cooperation with the Philippine Bamboo Foundation and Mga Anak ni Inang Daigdig. The project is a concrete offer for this Year of the Youth in response to Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ Encyclical to “hear the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor” as well as the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The project aims to grow as much as 200,000 and more native bamboos specifically at the threatened watershed areas of Metro Manila in a year.

WHY GROW MORE BAMBOOS?

There are a variety of endemic bamboos in the Philippines. Through the researches and studies gathered by the Philippine Bamboo Foundation, they found out that bamboo can safeguard the water source in the watersheds. Bamboos can quickly mature in five years, thereby preventing soil erosion and flooding. It can help create livelihood too for nearby communities. Moreover, bamboos can give more than 35% oxygen than any other tree. These grasses are genuinely nature’s gifts in a mitigating climate crisis.

WHAT CAN THIS PROJECT OFFER MORE?

Bamboo growing is not the only purpose of this project. The underlying aim is to achieve an ecological conversion. This program desires that the youth will be able to assess his or her lifestyle concerning how he or she cares for the earth until the right transformation happens. Coupled with the bamboo growing, the organizers will offer a formation program which will mold personal and social values towards environmental sustainability.

WHO CAN JOIN & SUPPORT?

This project is for everyone. Young people from different organizations and groups can join any open schedules specifically on any of the following activities: (1) Production of Bamboo Seedlings (2) Actual Bamboo Growing (3) Formation-Workshops.

It’s not easy to prepare and grow bamboo. Another good and helpful way is to sponsor at least one bamboo. Your sponsorship covers the five-year monitoring and care, cost per propagule from transportation and nursery, land clearing, safety, and logistical operations, geo-mapping and other relevant activities to sustain the growth and progress of the project. Once you sponsor, your name will be geotagged in our Bamboohay App. Amazing! Our friends from the Mga Anak ni Inang Daigdig will take charge in the post-growing activities. Watershed communities such as the indigenous people will greatly benefit.

If you or your organization/institution/company would like to be one of our bamboo sponsors ready for growing, we have the 200K Bamboohay Challenge Secretariat to help you.
