Towards a stronger Visayas Cluster: SCAFE 101 unites Visayas SCAns

Updated: Feb 6

Last January 26-28, 2024, the SCAP National Secretariat organized the SCAFE 101 for Visayas Cluster in partnership with the CM-SCA Diocesan Secretariat of Tagbilaran. Fifty (50) participants composed of students, advisers, and animators from five Arch/Dioceses gathered at the Mercedarian Retreat House- Diocese of Bacolod, Archdiocese of Cebu, Diocese of San Carlos, Diocese of Tagbilaran, and Diocese of Talibon.

Day 1: Reflection on Human Spirituality

SCAFE 101 Started with a recollection and reflection on human spirituality and how it is important that in understanding the self, one must always know and understand the Creator, our Lord. Our guest speakers, Fr. Jose Guivencan and Dr. Darlene Echavia, Mother of Life Institute President, helped us reflect on and be sensitive to the grace of God and how we can nurture it. The opening mass, presided by Fr. Johnson, reminded us that the Lord sets the encounter with Him and we can only prepare ourselves for whenever that encounter

arrives. The day ended with a Prayer in the way of Taize.

Day 2: Identity and Role of SCA in the Church and in the Community

Day 2 of SCAFE focused on the review of the identity, mission, vision, and approach of SCAP and how it is relevant in the Church and the community today. Through activities, games, and various discussion sessions, the participants were able to experience different tools and approaches in handling sessions that can be used in their own dioceses and units. We also read the story of the former Chief Justice Artemio Panganiban and his SCA Story to delve deeper into the impact of SCA in the communities where it is present. With the help of the Doodle Art from Bro. Greenheart Hermitage, OAR, we were able to create a SCAnvas showcasing what SCAns can do within their communities and circles. Day 2 ended with a sharing of culture and experiences through the Solidarity Night.

Day 3: Organizing and Sustaining SCA

The Last day of SCAFE 101 was a day of planning and discerning how each diocese can create spaces of encounter with Christ. This eventually led to the cluster meeting where the group shared their hopes and dreams for the Visayas Cluster. These inputs will be followed through together with the National Secretariat. The activity ended with a Closing Mass to celebrate God's goodness and guidance all throughout the formation exchange.

The SCAFE 101 was facilitated by the National Secretariat staffs, ate Karen and kuya Steven, together with kuya Melvin Pedrosa, one the SCAP NS Volunteer Consultants, and kuya Aldrin Gornez, the Diocesan Coordinator of SCA Cebu.

SCAFE 101 is a formation exchange aimed at forming and training facilitators and leaders that would organize and sustain SCA within their Dioceses and Units. This is the second SCAFE 101 run of the initial six (6) runs planned out - Zambales, Visayas, Mindanao, North Luzon, NCR and South Luzon, Central Luzon.
